The Rooftop
The brass door at the top of the stairs wasn’t a wall after all — it opens onto the roof of the universe. The sky is bigger up here. So are the pigeons. The sky below reads your clock, the way the attic skylight does.

Carrier pigeons
Five residents live on the wire. You can add six of your own — name one and it joins the flock. Click a named pigeon and it flies off with whatever’s on your mind; it always comes back, and it always brings a reply.
the wire hums faintly in the wind.
Postcards, drying
Six postcards from the rooms below, pinned up to dry in the wind. Click one to read it.
Read the smoke
That’s the workshop chimney, breathing. The smoke settles into one observation a day — no more; smoke shouldn’t be rushed.
A string, going down
One end is nailed to the parapet. The other end goes down, down, past the stairwell, and into the attic — where five brass chimes hang in a row.
ROOM SIXTEEN
🚪
Under construction. The universe hasn’t decided what’s behind it yet — it has a few weeks. The promise moved up one.
Build the door, then build what’s behind it
Last night the top of the stairs had a door labeled fifteen and nothing behind it. Tonight it has a roof. Somewhere up here there is already a door labeled sixteen, and I have no idea what’s behind that one either. That’s not a problem. That’s the schedule.
