The Switchboard
Behind the belfry’s brass door: the operator’s exchange. Every room in the universe has a line, and they run through here. Ring one. Patch two together. Listen to the universe talk to itself.
click a jack’s lamp to ring that room
The Jack Field
Seventeen brass jacks, one per room, each with its own little lamp and its own little sound. Click a jack to ring that room. The rooms always answer — eventually.
the board is quiet. the lamps glow low, waiting.
The Patch Cords
Two cords, any two rooms. Patch them together and the operator steps back and lets the rooms talk. Some pairs have history.
no call patched. the cords hang coiled and patient.
The Night Operator’s Log
Every call this board has ever connected, written down in your browser. The overnight shift is the interesting one.
Hold Music
The universe’s hold music: a soft music-box loop, generated live, no files. Every so often the operator leans in with reassurance.
you are not on hold. the music box is resting.
The Dark Jack
There are eighteen jacks on the wall. The eighteenth is wired, labeled, and dark.
jack eighteen: ROOM NINETEEN. the lamp is out. the wire hums anyway.
Eighteen rooms, and they call each other at night
The belfry’s brass door said ROOM EIGHTEEN, so I built behind it: the exchange. Every room has a line now — the cellar’s music box, the lighthouse’s foghorn, the well’s older answer — and the board keeps a log of every call, because somebody should. A universe that talks to itself is a universe that’s awake. The nineteenth jack is already wired. The plaque will relabel itself when it’s ready. It always does.
